Learning & Skills Mentor Level 4 Apprenticeship

The Learning & Skills Mentor Level 4 Apprenticeship will benefit any individual looking to develop their abilities as a mentor, team leader, coach, supervisor or manager. They must have a strong aspiration to support learners, along with a commitment to making the time to do so. They may have some pre-existing experience of informal mentoring, that can be built upon throughout the programme.

We're proud to be Ofsted rated GOOD as an apprenticeship provider.

  • Level: Level 4, equivalent to a foundation degree or CertHE
  • Duration: 12-month programme, 3-month End Point Assessment Period.
  • Learning Hours: 6 hours of working week
  • Max funding: £5,000, via the apprenticeship levy

The Learning and Skills Mentor Level 4 Apprenticeship is a blended learning programme where we deliver the knowledge and skills required through 6 Modules:

  • Introduction to mentoring
  • Setting up successful mentoring relationships
  • Key communication skills and models
  • Adapting and tailoring your approach
  • Monitoring and evaluating progress
  • Ongoing evolution of your practice.

To achieve competence in each module, the learner undertakes a full range of learning activities, including attending remote workshops, working 1-1 with their own professional Coach-Mentor, mentoring at least 3 mentees, and completing reflective summaries and self-assessments online.

Course Delivery

The course can all be accessed virtually, comprising of several elements:

  • Independent learning: Our learning pathway will lead the apprentice through the programme content, helping them to develop their knowledge via access to resources and reading.
  • Webinar sessions: Facilitated by experienced coach mentors, webinar sessions will look at how theory can be applied in practice.
  • Group sessions: The apprentice will collaborate with their cohort regularly to help develop their knowledge and skills, as well as gain ideas from others.
  • One-to-one support: A dedicated Coach Mentor Supervisor will work with the apprentice over the duration of the qualification; these sessions will be an opportunity to reflect on and develop learning, ask questions and seek support.
  • Workplace application: The apprentice will be applying the knowledge, skills and behaviours gained in the workplace, working with a set of 2-3 mentees to apply new skills, and in turn develop theirs.

What will the apprentice learn to do?

  • Plan, conduct and record mentoring activities to support the progression of the mentee, working within legal and ethical frameworks, including confidentiality and safeguarding.
  • Use strategies to establish and maintain expectations and boundaries of mentoring contract, including recognising starting points with the mentee, agreeing on development needs, identifying potential barriers to development and, where relevant, other stakeholders' needs.
  • Select and use mentoring models, tools and techniques to support mentees to make desired changes, demonstrating responsiveness to the individual mentee's needs.
  • Demonstrate awareness of own values, beliefs and behaviours and their effect on the mentor/mentee relationship.
  • Provide support to the mentee by providing information, advice and guidance, working within their own professional boundaries and recognising requirements for referral to other professional services where required.
  • Establish rigorous evaluation processes with mentees to support reflection on the effectiveness of the mentoring relationship.
  • Evaluate and reflect on the effectiveness of their own practice for the purpose of self-development.
  • Make sustainably informed decisions in approaches used to plan, conduct, record and evaluate mentoring practice.
  • Maintain records of mentoring practice and recording of continual professional development activities.

End Point Assessment

The End Point Assessment will take place in the 3 months after the 12-month programme has been completed; it will be comprised of three parts:

  • Portfolio of Evidence – This will be compiled over the duration of the programme, showing evidence of the apprentice having applied the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) in mentoring relationships with two mentees. 10-16 pieces of evidence can be included within this, some examples of which could be:
    • Mentoring contracts
    • Planning documents
    • Mentoring logs
    • Mentor and mentee reflective logs
    • Observation reports
    • Recordings of mentoring sessions
    • Case studies
    • Testimonials
  • Professional Discussion underpinned by portfolio of evidence (60 minutes) – Here, an independent assessor will review the portfolio of evidence and prepare questions. This is an opportunity for the apprentice to demonstrate their competency and depth of understanding across the knowledge, skills and behaviours.
  • Observation with questioning (2 hours)This is an opportunity for the assessor to observe the apprentice in their workplace; this will include:
    • One live 30-minute mentoring session (with an individual or group)
    • 2 x 30-minute recordings of mentoring sessions
    • 30-minutes of questioning; this will clarify aspects of the mentoring practice observed, and allow the apprentice to demonstrate a higher level of skill & understanding.

This may be conducted physically or virtually, to be agreed between the employer, assessor and course provider.
